Academy Sports + Outdoors Donation Benefits School’s Basketball Program After Flood

Cypress, TX (May 6, 2016) Cypress Falls High School’s performance gymnasium floor was among the total losses from the April floods that hit the CFISD community. Due to a donation this week from business partner Academy Sports + Outdoors, Golden Eagle basketball practices will avoid being collateral damage.

Upon learning of the extensive damage to the Cypress Falls gym, Academy donated the following sporting goods from its 19720 Northwest Freeway location that will allow the team to shift its practices to the outdoor tennis courts:

  • four Spalding 54-inch acrylic portable basketball hoops;
  • 12 Spalding Performance NBA Street outdoor basketballs; and
  • 12 Spalding Neverflat® Soft Grip basketballs.

The items were delivered and assembled at the school on May 5—free of charge.

“CFISD is so fortunate to have businesses in our district like Academy Sports + Outdoors that are responsive to community needs such as the recent flooding that damaged the gymnasiums at Cypress Falls High School,” said Leslie Francis, CFISD director of marketing and business relations, who facilitated the Academy partnership. “Academy’s donation allows the Eagles’ basketball teams to return to offseason practice with minimal loss of time.”

Academy said the donation was in line with the company’s long history and philosophy of active hometown community support and partnerships.

Head boys’ basketball Coach Rich Flores, whose Eagles have focused on strength and agility drills since the flood, said the athletes are anxious to return to action.

“Cypress Falls is extremely grateful for Academy’s donation,” Flores said. “Our girls’ and boys’ basketball programs will now be able to continue to develop our players thanks to their generosity.”
