CFISD Student of the Week: Tommy Nguyen

Cypress, TX (June 1, 2016) Cypress Ridge High School senior Tommy Nguyen made it a goal during his final semester to challenge himself with his schoolwork. “Some seniors have ‘senioritis,’ but I wanted to keep doing my work on time and not procrastinate. It is a good habit to develop before going to college.” To prepare for a potential career in the medical field, Nguyen visited Methodist Willowbrook Hospital each week during his junior year to capture the feeling of a hospital environment. A member of the top 10 percent of his graduating class, Nguyen aspires to attain success in order to support his family and give back to those less fortunate.

School: Cypress Ridge High School

Age: 17

Grade: 12

Accomplishments: Third place, Cypress Ridge talent show (freshman year); elected as officer of Interact Club; photograph displayed at CFISD art show; accepted into hospital rotations; top 10 percent of graduating class.

Favorite class: Auto Tech. “Being around the grease and getting your hands dirty makes you feel like you accomplished great things even if it was just an oil change. This class has given me an insight on one of the possible choices for my future career. Learning how to fix cars is not easy; however, I like the challenge that it brings to me. Auto Tech is kind of like math class—there will always be problems but there will also be many solutions to fixing it.”

Favorite things to do after class: “Having my priorities straight, I do my homework after taking a break at home. Whenever I’m done with homework, I dance with whatever extra time I have. Video games are an extra, depending on what time it is. I usually play them before I sleep so I can relax and fall asleep right after.”

Favorite song: “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa feat. Charlie Puth

Favorite website: YouTube. “You learn a lot of things when you roam through YouTube. The sections consist of educational, entertainment, music and many more. The diversity on YouTube has grown, as many people from other countries in the world have been able to interact with others through their love for making YouTube videos.”

Favorite TV show: Fresh Off The Boat. “This show is my favorite because I can relate a lot of the materials to my everyday life. The show is about a young Asian boy whose parents came over from Asia. Growing up he wants to branch off into the mainstream culture, such as rap and sports. It brings a comedic side of the Asian culture that are easy to relate to because I’ve experienced them before.”

Favorite movie: The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift. “My love for cars all began with the start of this movie. From seeing cars with heavily modified body kits, to even drifting, this movie gave me a drive to want to one day build my own race car and even try drifting.”

Ambition: “My ambition in life is to be successful. I’m not asking to be a millionaire or to have the biggest house. My goal is to have a job that can support my family and my parents in the future. I would also like to make a decent amount of money to where I am able to give to the less fortunate.”

What inspires you? “People in general inspire me every day. Seeing faces and the things people accomplish gives me the drive to hopefully one day do the things they did. Seeing big stars like Michael Jordan or Stephen Curry do the things they do with positive outcomes inspires me to do great things.”

What three things can’t you live without? Money, cars, and sneakers. “I have been interested in sneakers ever since I got my first pair. Collecting and wearing sneakers has given me a positive outlook on life.”
