Cy-Fair High School senior culinary student Jonathan Manalili placed third in the Mystery Basket Contest during the Texas Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Region 4 Leadership Meeting.
Manalili placed third among 26 competitors in the event, which was sponsored by the Texas Beef Council.
Using their own cooking equipment, students were given one hour to create a meal using four ingredients from the mystery basket: flank steak, a red bell pepper, an avocado and an orange.
“The judges were impressed with Jonathan’s creation, including the fried rice as his starch,” said Kara Palermo, Cy-Fair Culinary Academy instructor. “The contest required a lot of focus and quick-thinking since he didn’t have any help from teammates and couldn’t prepare for it like a normal meal. I was very proud of Jonathan for placing at the competition.”
As a top-three finisher from his region, Manalili qualified for the Mystery Basket Contest at the 2013 State FCCLA Leadership Meeting, set for April 10-13 in Dallas.
