The Cy-Fair High School boys’ golf team rebounded with a strong second round at the Region III-5A Golf Championships April 17-18 at Eagle Pointe Golf Club in Mont Belvieu to place second overall and qualify for the UIL State Golf Championships, set for April 29-30 in Austin.
After shooting a first-round score of 315 that left them in sixth place, the Bobcats came back strong with a second-round score of 295 to come within one stroke of the regional championship. Cy-Fair placed second with a 610 behind first-place Cinco Ranch (609). CFISD’s other regional team qualifier, Cypress Woods High School, placed sixth out of 16 teams (316-315 – 631).
Cy-Fair’s team scoring was comprised by Devin Mikulec (84-74 – 158), Nick Geisler (80-81 – 161), Ryan Laughlin (75-74 – 149), Stephen Chambers (76-73 – 149) and Andrew Reynolds (86-74 – 160).
“We knew we could play a lot better after our first round,” said Cy-Fair golf coach Rusty Hicks. “On the second day, Stephen Chambers led the charge by posting a 73 in windy and rainy conditions while three other golfers scored a 74. It was an incredible and total team effort when things looked pretty beak. ‘BFND’ [Bobcat Fight Never Dies] was definitely in the works.”
Cypress Woods’ team score was comprised of Connor Smith (82-85 – 167), Kyle Smith (82-84 – 166), Ryan Ayers (81-79 – 160), Austin Hughes (76-79 – 155) and Patrick Rhodes (77-73 – 150).
CFISD’s two individual district medalists that qualified for regionals—Langham Creek’s Ryan Peterson (77-74 – 151) and Cypress Lakes’ Travis Ola (78-76 – 154)—placed 11th and 17th overall, respectively.
Cy-Fair will tee off at the state tournament on April 29 at the Morris Williams Golf Course (3851 Manor Road) in Austin.
