A pair of Cypress Falls High School students were among a select group of 44 debate students from across the country to compete at the George W. Bush Institute Economic Debates recently held in Dallas.
Seniors Nikunj Soni and Hassan Khan attended the event, which began with a keynote address from former President George W. Bush on Saturday night. The debaters received the debate topic on Sunday morning: Private property rights are necessary for economic growth, and researched the topic for an hour before beginning competition.
Following three rounds of debate, Khan was recognized as one of the top two finalists at the Sunday lunch reception.
The panel of judges, including two directors from the Bush Economic Institute, an economic adviser from Mexico, a Board member from the Dallas Urban Debate League and one of the top attorneys in the Dallas area, praised Khan as being “academically brilliant.”
Khan won $3,000 in scholarship and prize money, which was presented by James K. Glassman, a senior economist at JP Morgan Chase & Co., and a renowned expert on economic policy.
“This was such a great weekend for the Cy Falls debaters, and one of those gold medal moments for a debate coach,” says Cypress Falls debate coach Debbie Waddell.
