Posted December 04th 2014

Cypress, TX News (December 4, 2014) – The Women’s Choice Award is pleased to recognize North Cypress Medical Center (NCMC) as a recipient of the Seal of Recommendation for the  2015 America’s Best Hospital for Patient Safety rating. This distinction is the only evidence-based designation that identifies the country’s best hospitals based on robust criteria regarding patient safety and what women say they want from a hospital.

“North Cypress Medical Center is thrilled to have received this recognition,” states Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, Dr. Robert A. Behar. “Our core hospital mission is to treat patients in the safest environment possible. The NCMC team of physicians, nurses, and ancillary staff ensures that on a daily basis. I am extremely proud of our team and this recognition.”

The 310 best hospitals for patient safety were identified based on having a low-incidence of problems arising from surgical errors and infections. The hospitals that report their frequency to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services are ranked using twelve measures. Hospitals are eliminated from consideration for not reporting on at least four of the surgical complication measures or four of the infection measures, have a below average patient recommendation rating, or not implementing surgical checklists.

Cypress, TX News – Houston Methodist Willowbrook Recognizes Local EMS Providers

Cy-Fair Texas News
Posted July 21st 2014

Cypress, TX News (July 21, 2014) - Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital honored local emergency medical service (EMS) professions recently with a celebration luncheon and awards ceremony on the hospital campus during National EMS Week.

“Our emergency department and entire hospital staff recognize the value, accomplishments, and critical role played by all of the EMS providers in our Northwest Houston community,” said Beryl Ramsey, senior vice president and chief executive officer at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital. “These professionals are dedicated to public service and to saving lives each and every day, and it is a privilege to be able to show our appreciation for their hard work and for the integral role they play within our healthcare system.”

Two awards were presented by Ms. Ramsey and Glenn Dennis, director of nursing, emergency, critical care and observation at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, recognizing EMS providers for outstanding response times in 2013. Cypress Creek EMS was awarded the Quickest Door-to-Balloon Time, achieving the fastest time from patient arrival at the hospital’s emergency department to when the interventional cardiologist opened up the patient’s blocked coronary artery, restoring blood flow to the heart. The national standard is under 90 minutes, and Cypress Creek accomplished a 29 minute door-to-balloon time in 2013.

Cypress Creek EMS was also awarded the 2013 Khurana EMS Stroke Award, which has been established as part of the Swadesh Khurana Endowment, honoring the memory of Swadesh Khurana and supporting the advancement of stroke care at Houston Methodist Willowbrook. The stroke award is presented to the EMS provider that achieves the Fastest Door-to-tPA time, which is the time it takes for an ischemic stroke patient to arrive at the hospital’s emergency department, complete evaluation, receive appropriate diagnostics, and receive an infusion of the clot busting drug tPA. Administration of tPA within 90 minutes of symptom onset dramatically improves the chances of recovering from a stroke, and Cypress Creek EMS achieved a 32 minute door-to-tPA time in 2013.

“In the medical world you often hear the phrase ‘time is tissue,’” said Ms. Ramsey. “The sooner stroke patients receive treatment, the greater the benefit, and we are proud to partner with our local EMS providers to have great success in ensuring best practices in stroke care and achieving door-to-tPA times faster than the recommended guidelines.” (more…)

Cypress, TX News – Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital Hosts Community Stroke Event

Cy-Fair Texas News
Posted June 24th 2014

Cypress, TX News (June 24, 2014) - More than 150 community members attended an educational event on the Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital campus on May 29, 2014. Held in the Swadesh Khurana Healing Garden, guests were offered a free stroke risk assessment upon arrival, measuring their risk factors and assessing their knowledge regarding stroke signs and symptoms. Lunch was provided for all attendees, and the hospital’s stroke team visited with guests, providing educational materials and answering questions.

Sheila Fata, vice president and chief nursing officer, Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, welcomed the community and recognized the generous contributions of the Khurana family, which made the event possible. “We were blessed to have a representative of the Khurana family present at this event,” said Ms. Fata. “The family has provided philanthropic support to advance stroke care and education programs at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, and it was such a privilege to hold this event in the ‘Swadesh Khurana Healing Garden’ which bears the name of their loved one, Swadesh Khurana, who lost her life due to a stroke.”

The program started with a presentation by Kate Simpson, director of quality improvement at the American Heart Association, who presented the hospital with the prestigious “Get with the Guidelines” Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes hospitals for implementing excellent care for stroke patients according to evidence-based guidelines. The hospital was also recognized as a recipient of the association’s Target: Stroke Honor Roll for improving timeliness of stroke care. Over the past year, 100% of the hospital’s eligible ischemic stroke patients received tPA, a clot-busting agent, within 60 minutes of arriving at the hospital (known as ‘door-to-needle’ time). If administered within the first three hours after the start of stroke symptoms, tPA has shown signs of significantly reversing the effects of ischemic stroke and reducing permanent disability.

Following the award presentation, Dr. Amy Naquin-Chappel, neurologist and medical director of the Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital Stroke Program, presented a lecture covering stroke prevention, recognizing and responding to signs and symptoms, and the latest treatments in stroke care. Speaking to the audience in lay terms, Dr. Naquin-Chappel engaged the audience with her interactive presentation, leading a question and answer session, and visiting with attendees following the program.
