Cypress, TX (May 17, 2016) Six CFISD principals and administrators graduated May 11 from the Rice University Education Entrepreneurship Program (REEP), a one-year business training program from the top-25 nationally ranked Jones Graduate School of Business.
Cypress, TX (May 17, 2016) The CFISD Board of Trustees recognized 11 high school students who participated in the 22nd annual CFISD Board Shadowing Project during the regularly scheduled meeting on May 16.
The project pairs students with CFISD Board or administrative team members, allowing them to observe firsthand the functions of the Board of Trustees.
Cypress, TX (May 16, 2016) EagleBurgmann, a subsidiary of Freudenberg, the Adopt-a-School partner of Kirk Elementary School, announced during the CFISD Board of Trustees meeting on May 16 its intent to donate $250,000 to the school.
Cypress, TX (May 16, 2016) When flooding struck the CFISD community last month, Cypress Creek High School senior Blake Hughes—a volunteer with the Cypress Creek Volunteer Fire Department—spent nearly 39 hours helping those affected by the disaster. Hughes, whose father also works for the Cypress Creek VFD, performed multiple rescues in the days after the flood. He often volunteers overnight and attends school the following day. “I can’t think of a better example of a great young man,” said Jason Hawkins, Cypress Creek assistant principal.
Cypress, TX (May 16, 2016) The Cypress Ranch and Langham Creek high school baseball teams both won their Region III-6A area playoff games over the weekend to advance to the quarterfinal round, where they will meet one another for the chance to play in the regional semifinal.
Cypress Ranch defeated Katy Seven Lakes in a best-of-three series, winning Game 1, 10-5, before dropping Game 2, 7-6, in 13 innings. The Mustangs won Game 3, 9-0, to advance.
Cypress, TX (May 17, 2016) The Cypress Springs High School girls’ track and field team placed second overall, and CFISD brought home nine medals at the UIL State Track and Field Championships, held May 13-14 in Austin.
Cypress, TX (May 13, 2016) A representative from Think Through Math visited Woodard Elementary School on May 13 to award the school top honors for points in its program.
Cypress, TX (May 13, 2016) The CFISD community raised approximately $145,000 for student scholarships through the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) 28th annual BF Adam Golf Classic, held May 12 at BlackHorse Golf Club.
Cypress, TX (May 13, 2016) Spillane Middle School’s math and science teams gave an outstanding performance at the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association (TMSCA) State Championship, held April 16 at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Cypress, TX (May 12, 2016) Today, Harris County officials announced the opening of North Eldridge Parkway from Interstate 10 to Clay roads through the Addicks Reservoir. This section of road has been impassable due to high water for about three weeks, after torrential rainfall April 17-18 flooded west and northwest Harris County and filled the two stormwater detention reservoirs to record pool levels.
Cypress, TX (May 12, 2016) The Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) recently treated staff members at Bane and Moore Elementary schools to free lunch for being the top participants in the CFEF Donate to Educate program in 2015-2016.
Cypress, TX (May 11, 2016) A significant traffic change is coming to the I-610 West Loop/US 290 interchange. The contractor is progressing with construction activities and crews are ready to begin work on the US 290 westbound main lanes from I-610 to W. 34th. This requires the US 290 exit off northbound I-610 West Loop be relocated from the left side of the freeway to the right side. The exit will be temporarily placed on a portion of the ramp that will eventually connect I-10 to US 290. The switch is planned the weekend of May 13 and involves placing barrier, pavement markers and signs.

The Cypress Woods High School Key Club embarked April 21 on a four-hour journey to Dallas, where the 67th annual Texas-Oklahoma Key Club District Convention (DCON) was held. The convention is held in order to recognize the Key Clubs throughout Texas and Oklahoma that went above and beyond in service projects, amount of hours or any other unique way they promoted service.
Cypress, TX (May 11, 2016) CFISD is celebrating school nurses all week during National School Nurses Week and on Wednesday, May 11—National School Nurse Day—a day established by the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) to recognize the role of school nurses in the educational setting.
CFISD employs 88 registered nurses, as well as six licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) who provide direct student care and 43 clinic assistants.
Cypress, TX (May 11, 2016) Spillane Middle School seventh-grade student Tanya Manocha is an outstanding piano player who is continually challenging herself. The HORIZONS student and cross country runner skipped a grade in math, and recently earned a state recognition in the ACT. She is in the process of learning a third language and hopes to be a life-saving surgeon.
Cypress, TX (May 10, 2016) Today, Harris County and City of Houston officials announced the opening of Westheimer Parkway through Barker Reservoir (from FM 1093 to South Fry Road), and Clay Road through the Addicks Reservoir (from State Highway 6 to Brittmore Drive), providing some relief to heavy traffic conditions caused by those closures. Cypress, TX (May 9, 2016) Cypress Creek High School algebra teachers hosted a carnival on April 29 for every student enrolled in an Algebra I class to help prepare them for upcoming STAAR assessments.
Cypress, TX (May 6, 2016) Northwest Assistance Ministries (NAM), raised more than $146,000 during this year’s Endowment Dinner—an annual event held to raise funds to enhance and provide financial stability for the future of NAM.
On May 4, 2016, almost 200 people gathered at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott. Guest Emcee Dana Tyson, host of Sunny 99.1’s morning radio, lit up the night presenting guest speakers: Jack Canfield, the co-creator of the New York Times best-selling “Chicken Soup For The Soul” book series and former NAM client, Suzette Kibble-Hicks who with the help of NAM’s Social Services was able to overcome adversity.
“It was such an amazing evening for all of us here at NAM,” explained Carole Little, NAM President & CEO.” Having such extraordinary people donate their time and resources to fulfill our mission truly shows what NAM is all about.”

Cypress, TX (May 3, 2016) Cypress Springs High School senior Jay’Len Boone was one of 1,000 students nationwide named to the final class of high school recipients of the Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program. Boone, who was selected from a pool of 53,000 recipients, will receive scholarship funds to pursue a degree in any undergraduate major and selected graduate programs at any accredited college or university of his choice.

Cypress, TX (May 3, 2016) Students from six CFISD high schools won awards at the 89th annual Interscholastic League Press Conference (ILPC), the state journalism convention held at the University of Texas, April 16-17.
Cypress, TX (May 3, 2016) Cy-Fair ISD track and field teams will send four boys’ entries and 12 girls’ entries to the UIL Track and Field State Meet, May 12-14 in Austin, after they placed in their respective events at the Region III meet in Webster, April 29-30.

Cypress, TX (May 2, 2016) Keith Elementary School fourth-grade student Andres Antochiw has excelled in his first year at Keith since struggling with the English language at the beginning of the school year. Now, the HORIZONS gifted and talented student likes to help other students with their own language and academic struggles. When he’s not in class, he can be found working his way through the third reading of the entire Harry Potter series, and he plans to join a competitive soccer league this summer.
Cypress, TX (May 2, 2016) The District 17-6A baseball season wrapped up on April 29 with four teams qualifying for the University Interscholastic League (UIL) playoffs.
Cy-Fair High School clinched the district championship with a 15-2 record, while Langham Creek and Cypress Ranch high schools tied for second at 13-4. Langham Creek won the No. 2 seed tiebreaker after defeating Cypress Ranch in district play. Cypress Creek High School was the fourth-place finisher at 11-6.
Cypress, TX (May 1, 2016) The Cypress Creek High School girls’ water polo team clinched the Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (TISCA) Water Polo State Championship on April 30 at Texas A&M University, defeating Southlake Carroll 8-4 in the title game to win it all.
It was the Cypress Creek girls’ sixth all-time championship and first since 2005. Head Coach Jeff Chandler, who won his first title as the Cougars’ coach, was named TISCA Water Polo Coach of the Year.
“It was definitely a thousand-pound gorilla off my back kind of a feeling,” Chandler said. “But more than anything I’m very proud and happy for the girls. A lot of hard work and dedication went into this.”
The Cougars defeated Alamo Heights, Clear Brook and St. Agnes to advance to the championship game. They then concluded a dominant season in which they went 37-0 and never trailed in a game with an equally impressive championship performance. (more…)

Cypress, TX (April 28, 2016) Two-hundred forty student athletes from all 10 CFISD high schools qualified for the Academic All-District 17-6A Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer Teams, released this week.
Soccer players named to the academic all-district team finished the season in good standing and earned a composite weighted grade point average of 5.5 or higher for all classes for the two identified six weeks that make up the majority of their regular season.

Cypress, TX (April 26, 2016) Due to flooding and subsequent school closures that resulted in cancellation of the April 19 ACT assessment, ACT officials have agreed on Tuesday, May 17 as an alternate test date for CFISD.
Although the ACT’s official make-up day is May 3, the college admissions testing company granted the alternate May 17 date to avoid a May 3 conflict with Algebra I EOC and AP tests.
“The district has committed to students and parents to administer this important assessment free to all 11th-grade students,” said Dr. Ashley Clayburn, assistant superintendent of school improvement and accountability. “We thank the ACT for working on an alternate assessment date to best accommodate our college-bound juniors.”
