Flooding Forces Cancellation of Area Track and Field Meet

Cy-Fair Texas News
Posted April 21st 2016

Cypress, TX (April 20, 2016)

The unprecedented amount of rainfall and flooding throughout northwest Harris County has prompted District 17-6A and District 18-6A athletics directors to cancel the Area Track and Field Meet originally scheduled for April 21 at Cypress Ridge High School.

As a result, the top two places in each event from both the 17-6A and 18-6A district meets will qualify for the Region III-6A Track and Field Meet, set for April 29-30 at Clear Creek ISD’s Challenger Columbia Stadium in Webster.

CFISD Director of Athletics Ed Warken said the historic weather event forced the difficult decision, as several student athletes who are unable to leave their houses or subdivisions would not have been able to travel to the area meet.

“If we tried to pull off this meet, we would have some athletes unable to attend who could be our No. 1 and No. 2 in each event,” Warken said. “It would be difficult not to send our best to regionals. Also, we have not practiced in a week and would therefore put our athletes at risk of injury.

“I know how hard the athletes and coaches have worked this track season and am very proud. This type of weather event has never occurred in our district, and we feel this is the best decision for all,” Warken said.
