The National High School Honors Orchestra (NHSHO) is a performing group of 100 competitively selected high school musicians who assemble biennially to peform at the ASTA National Conference. Following a selective audition process, only 40 high school violinists from the United States were chosen to participate in the 2014 NHSHO in Louisville, Ky., March 5-7.

The students will perform Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47, by Dmitri Shostakovich, under the direction of conductor Gary Lewis, director of orchestras and professor of music in the College of Music at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

An accomplished violinist, Du has also earned Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) all-state orchestra for three consecutive years. As a sophomore, she was named an honorable mention winner in the Fort Bend Symphony Orchestra (FBSO) 2012 Young Artist Concerto Competition.

“Melissa is an extraordinarily accomplished student and player,” said Dr. John Ricarte, orchestra director at Cypress Falls. “Melissa works hard and is always very well prepared to perform. Her talent is absolutely phenomenal as a violin player.”
