Cypress Falls’ Stephens Celebrates 600th Career Victory

Cy-Fair, TX (January 15, 2016) Cypress Falls High School head girls’ basketball coach Jim Stephens celebrated his 600th career victory as the Lady Eagles defeated College Park High School on Nov. 17. The milestone came four years after Stephens notched win number 500 in November 2011.

Stephens’ 600 victories span more than 30 years as a head basketball coach for high school boys, professional men overseas, and high school girls.

Stephens’ coaching career launched in 1981 as a middle school assistant coach in Pasadena ISD. His journey continued with stops at South Houston High School and Spring Woods High School before he took a position coaching men’s professional basketball in the Middle East.

He returned to the United States as an assistant for former Cypress Falls boys’ coach Jim Draudt for two years before accepting head coaching stints at Westside and Conroe high schools. He returned to Cypress Falls as the head girls’ coach in 2007-2008.

“The best thing, since this news got out about the 600 wins, was hearing from some of my old players,” he said. “When I got into coaching I felt that’s what I was led to do, was to work with young people. The games are fun at the time and the competition takes over, but looking back, it’s all about the relationships you’ve established.”

Although Stephens did not indicate how many more years he would remain with the Golden Eagles, he said his time at Cypress Falls has been one of his career highlights.
