Cypress, TX News – Cypress Springs Students Explore Rice University

Cypress, TX News (October 29, 2014) - Thirty-nine students in Cypress Springs High School’s fine arts program recently joined hundreds of students from throughout Houston in attending the National Association for College Admission Counseling – Performing and Visual Arts College Fair at Rice University. The students met with representatives from more than 80 fine arts universities, representing schools from Scotland to Washington state.

Cypress Springs tech theater teacher Greg Alldredge, who spearheaded the trip, said he wanted to bring Panther students ever since he visited the college fair in 2013.

“The kids loved it,” he said. “They were surprised at how many people and colleges were there. They had the opportunity to not only talk to recruiters, but also some students who were there working the booth and people who strongly influence admission decisions.”

Students from Cypress Springs’ band, orchestra, computer graphics, 2D design, technical theatre and acting programs joined Alldredge, band director Larry Brown, and art teacher Theresa Burgess on the trip. Alldredge said the students found the college fair beneficial, and even received potential leads on scholarship opportunities.

“We had a couple 2D design students who had very good feedback on the portfolios they brought with them,” said Alldredge. “Some of the visual arts representatives were saying they could submit their work and probably earn a scholarship. Everybody who went said they enjoyed it.”
