According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer (excluding skin cancer) and the second leading cause of cancer death for both men and women in the United States. More than 142,000 Americans are diagnosed with the disease each year. If caught early, colorectal cancer is one of the most curable.

It is important to know the risk factors for developing colon cancer. Chances of developing the disease tend be higher in individuals 50 or older, with a family history of the disease, and have a personal history of colorectal polyps or colorectal cancer. Other risk factors include unhealthy eating, lack of exercise, smoking and bowel disorders such as Crohn’s disease.

Fortunately, lifestyle choices can lower the risk of colorectal cancer. To lower the chance of developing colorectal cancer, it is important to increase the intensity and frequency of physical activity, eat fruits and vegetables, limit intake of red and processed meats, and avoid foods that irritate the colon such as carbonated drinks, milk products, citric fruits, chocolate, alcohol and spicy foods.
