National School Nurse Day has been celebrated since 1972 on the Wednesday of National School Nurse Week, May 4-8, 2015. According to the NASN, the week is a celebration of all school nurses for positively influencing the health and well-being of students nationally and globally through the many roles they fill, as well as serving a critical role in promoting students’ academic success for more than 110 years.

“As school nurses, much of what we do can seem to go unnoticed,” said Bevin Gordon, director of health services. “We help sick children feel comfortable while they wait for a parent to pick them up from school. We educate children about healthy habits that will hopefully contribute to a lifetime of excellent quality of life. We build relationships with students who have chronic medical concerns and offer them a place to feel safe. We help students access medical, dental and vision care in the community to ensure health and academic success. We pour our hearts into our profession because being a nurse is more than a job!”
