Cypress, TX News – Six Students Named Scholar Athlete Award Finalists

Cypress, TX News (May 7, 2014) - Six CFISD student athletes were selected as finalists in their respective sports for the Touchdown Club of Houston 2014 Scholar Athlete Awards.

The winners in each sport will be named during the Touchdown Club of Houston Spring Sports Scholar-Athlete Dinner set for May 28 at the JW Marriott Hotel (5150 Westheimer).

The finalists in each sport were selected from a pool of nominations. Athletes were rated on a 20-point scale, with 10 points given for academic achievement, five points for athletic achievement, and five points for community service and extracurricular participation. During the dinner, one finalist for each sport will be chosen as the winner and receive a $500 scholarship.

Cypress Falls High School senior basketball player Max Hassell is one of four finalists for the Male Basketball Scholar Athlete Award, while Cypress Woods High School senior Olivia Ogwumike is one of four finalists for the Female Basketball Scholar Athlete Award.

Jersey Village High School baseball player Mikey Sliepka is one of four finalists for the Baseball Scholar Athlete Award.

Jersey Village senior Michael Chen is one of four finalists for the Male Golf Scholar Athlete Award.

Cypress Creek High School senior Connor Sauer is one of four finalists for the Male Swimming Scholar Athlete Award.

Jersey Village senior  Brittany Wildack is one of four finalists for the Cheerleading Scholar Athlete Award.

“As an athletic department, we are proud of all of our finalists for the Touchdown Club of Houston’s Scholar Athlete of the Year Award,” said Ray Zepeda, CFISD associate athletic director. “This award rewards student athletes that exemplify the highest ideals of interscholastic athletics. Our athletic programs and schools have been greatly enriched by the example that these student athletes have provided for their fellow students.”
