Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital to Honor Physicians on National Doctors’ Day

Cypress, TX (March 22, 2016) All physicians at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital will be honored for National Doctors’ Day on Wednesday, March 30.

“Our physicians are such a vital asset to not only our hospital, but throughout our community,” said Keith Barber, chief executive officer, Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital & senior vice president, Houston Methodist. “We are so blessed to have such an amazing group of talented, compassionate doctors who treat more than just the illness, but care for the whole person – body and mind in a nurturing environment,” said Barber.

National Doctors’ Day is a time for people to show appreciation to the doctors who care for them and their loved ones. All Houston Methodist Willowbrook staff and volunteers are encouraged to take time to show our physicians how thankful we are to have them as part of our hospital family.

“Every day hundreds of patients and families from Northwest Houston and the Greater Houston area put their trust in the hands of our physicians. One of the reasons we are becoming a regional referral center, is because of our doctors’ commitment to providing Leading Medicine care. A heart felt thank you to all of our Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital medical staff members, for all that you do,” said Barber.

National Doctors’ Day was first observed in the 1930s in Winder, GA to recognize physicians for their work and contributions to society and the community. According to news archives located in the Wood Library Museum, March 30, 1842, was the first recorded date that a physician administered ether anesthesia to a patient prior to surgery. Thus, on March 30, 1933, Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, organized a luncheon to honor local physicians, mailed greeting cards to physicians and placed flowers on the graves of deceased doctors. The red carnation is commonly used as the symbolic flower for National Doctors’ Day.

In 1991, then U.S. president, President George H.W. Bush, proclaimed March 30, 1991, as National Doctors’ Day.
