The Cypress Woods High School girls basketball team celebrated two more major recognitions this week, in the wake of winning its first Class 6A state championship in March.
The Lady Wildcats traveled to the State Capitol on April 29, where they were recognized on the floor of the Texas House of Representatives. District 126 State Rep. Patricia Harless introduced House Resolution No. 2268 to honor the team, which was then adopted by the House.
The previous evening, on April 28, the Lady Wildcats were honored by the high school sports website MaxPreps and the Army National Guard in the ninth annual MaxPreps Basketball Tour of Champions.
Representatives from the National Guard, as well as MaxPreps representative Bill Moore, visited Cypress Woods to recognize the team prior to the baseball team’s home game against Cypress Ranch High School. MaxPreps chose to honor Cypress Woods as one of 10 of the nation’s top-ranked basketball teams out of more than 20,000 teams nationwide.
During the ceremony, head coach Virginia Flores accepted the Army National Guard national ranking trophy and a Tour of Champions banner.
“Everything that happened in March is still very surreal to me,” said Flores. “To have this kind of attention is very humbling. These girls worked so hard, and to earn that recognition is really special.”
