The competition began with a regional format, featuring 48 teams throughout the district facing a series of questions giving clues about different books and being asked to “Name That Book.” Seven teams moved on to the Name That Book finals: Copeland, Hairgrove, Hamilton, Holmsley, Lamkin, Rennell and Swenke elementary schools.

Rennell won the competition by correctly naming the book Almost Super by Marion Jensen.

“We are extremely proud of our team,” Palomares said. “They showed that teamwork, good manners and hard work truly pay off. They showed that when you read, you win!”

The mission of the Name That Book program is to foster lifelong reading by all third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students. The students are provided with a list of books and encouraged to read as many as possible, and the program culminates with a series of contests to celebrate the students’ knowledge of the books.

Roy Garcia, associate superintendent of school administration and leadership development, asked the questions to the teams in the finals. Judges included Dianne Meyer, Mackin representative and retired CFISD teacher and librarian; Phil Bildner, visiting author and former teacher; and Karen Wetzig, Lee Elementary School librarian and Name That Book committee chairperson. The timekeeper was Diane Garland, district coordinator for library services.
