Cy-Fair ISD distance runners recently finished their 2012 season at the UIL Cross Country Championships at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
In the boys’ race, Cypress Woods High School sophomore Zachary Quinlan was the district’s top finisher at 26th place overall with a time of 16:21.04.
The Cypress Woods boys’ team finished 12th overall with a total score of 262 and time of 1:25:13.02. The Wildcats’ other four runners comprising the team score were junior Aaron Austin (53rd, 17:02.77), junior Raymond Berrones (61st, 17:12.95), senior Connor Hanson (62nd, 17:14.07) and senior Harry Krantz (70th, 17:22.19).
In the girls’ race, Cy-Fair High School senior Lauren Fritz was the district’s top finisher at 29th place overall with a time of 18:59.44.
“Lauren has finally worked her way back into sub-19-minute shape after a long layoff last year. It is a good starting point for track,” says Cy-Fair head cross country coach Tom Kennedy. “The goal for Lauren is to get back to the state track meet.”
The Cy-Fair girls’ team finished ninth overall with a total score of 209 and time of 1:40:00.13. The Bobcats’ remaining four runners comprising the team score were senior Faith Banker (35th, 19:46.37), senior Emily Willingham (36th place, 19:46.44), sophomore Kassandra Luna (50th place, 20:13.23) and junior Kaila Salomonsen (71st, 21:14.65).
“I thought the team ended the season on a high note. We were second among the Region III-5A teams, so that was an improvement over a week ago,” Kennedy says. “It was the last cross country race for four seniors who have been a part of our varsity program for several years. We also had three underclassmen in their first state meet; that experience will be very helpful as we head into next season.”
Cy-Fair ISD’s remaining two individual qualifiers were Cypress Creek High School senior Kelly Robinson, who finished 54th overall with a time of 19:45.03; and Cypress Creek senior Haley Deakins, who placed 81st overall with a time of 20:33.66.
