Sampson Elemenetary student wins Elementary Spelling Bee

Sampson Elementary School fifth-grade student Mihir Suvarnawon first place by correctly spelling the word “nickelodeon” in the 15th round of the annual districtwide Elementary Spelling Bee, held recently at the Berry Center.

Reed Elementary School fifth-grade student Brian Lamwas the district’s runner-up. Both Suvarna and Lam will compete in the HoustonPBS Regional Spelling Bee, scheduled to be televised live from the HoustonPBS Studios on March 23 at 2 p.m.

Approximately 55 spellers will qualify for the regional bee. The top two spellers at the regional bee will qualify for the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

“The consensus from last night was that we had a lot of really great spellers who hung in there several rounds into the competition,” says Shakena McFarland, elementary language arts curriculum coach and spelling bee coordinator. “It was a successful competition, and we think our students will represent Cy-Fair ISD well at the regional spelling bee.”
