OfficeMax store manager Agha Kamal shares one of the gifted items – a Kindle Fire – to a surprised Lee Elementary School first-grade teacher Regina Butler.

The goal of the “A Day Made Better” program is to work to erase teacher-funded classrooms. Approximately 1,000 teachers across the country received the same surprise visit on Oct. 1.

In addition to a boxful of supplies including a Kindle Fire, digital camera and leather desk chair, each school received an extra box of supplies that were donated through an independent fund drive at each of the OfficeMax locations.

“It is honoring and humbling because all of the teachers [spend money for their classrooms],” said Jones, a second-year teacher at Hopper. “How awesome it would be if everyone could have the same gift. I am excited to share these awesome supplies with my colleagues and my students. They’re going to get to have some things that I couldn’t afford on my own.”

“It’s beyond my wildest dreams,” said Butler, a fourth-year Lee teacher. “I don’t do my job for recognition. I feel like it’s what I’m called to do. It’s my purpose in life. So to be honored in this way – it’s amazing, and it makes me feel appreciated.”
